Servicing fire protection systems and ensuring a large stock of parts are two very different tasks that require the van’s cargo compartment to be used in very different ways. On the one hand, the user needs to transport bulky items like fire extinguishers, hoses and cylinders. On the other he needs readily accessible supplies of small parts and fittings for rapid repairs to pressure reducers or valves.

The racking system we are looking at today is installed in a Volkswagen Transporter L1 H1. The Syncro team concentrated all the racking on the right of the van, leaving a large area of the floor completely free for carrying heavy, bulky items. This arrangement is very popular among Syncro customers. This particular van, however, features a special solution: the racking is split into two columns, one accessible by climbing on board, the other accessible from the ground through the side door.

Almost inevitably, something will fall onto the floor or slide into a wall. So, how can you avoid damage and reducing the value of your van? This Transporter is fitted with a floor liner made from resin-coated marine plywood and wall panels of galvanised and grey painted steel sheet.

Accessible from the inside

This section of racking consists of:

• a floor-level compartment over the wheel arch, with a patented lift-and-rotate door at the bottom
• a set of four shelves, the first and last fitted with Airline rails and metal rings for securing cargo
• a Multibox cabinet of tilting transparent containers
• a fold-away bench with telescopic support and vice

Accessible from the ground

This section of racking, located at the sliding side door, comprises:

• three metal drawers and three shelves, all facing outwards
• an open floor-level compartment with lashing straps across the front and back
• two Airline rails, attached to the back of the racking for use from inside the van

That solves the problem! The racking on the right of the van is fully functional for transporting tools and materials, while the empty space along the left wall and at the bulkhead provides plenty of opportunity for carrying large loads.

The cargo retaining accessories allow fire extinguishers and other items of equipment to be grouped together and secured with lashing straps if necessary.
