A FORD TRANSIT RACKING SOLUTION FOR A PAINTER AND DECORATOR
A Ford Transit L3 H3 for a painter and decorator
Painting and decorating 2.0: a well-organised, autonomous van!
Painting and decorating is a good example of a trade that has changed dramatically over the decades. Even the name has changed, from the simple painter of yesteryear to today’s more professional-sounding decorator. Working methods have changed too, and now increasingly require a high level of organisation and complete operational autonomy. The modern decorator has to work on very different sites and needs to safely transport equipment and materials as different as ladders, buckets of paint, scaffolding, power tools and gypsum plasterboard. How can he do it? The answer lies in a having a van that is properly equipped to stop buckets tipping over and delicate materials getting damaged – and one that makes its user fully autonomous in the event of a mains power failure.
Today’s case study: a Ford Transit L3 H3 with cargo bars for a painter and decorator in Vicenza
The van we are presenting today is a Ford Transit L3 H3 that Syncro fitted out for a Vicenza-based firm of specialist painters and decorators. The van is a very spacious variant, allowing racking to be installed on both sides and cargo retaining accessories on the bulkhead. The racking provides various forms of storage.
The solution seen here differs from the typical mobile workshop for the presence of cargo bars, which allow the interior to be divided into different sections and ensure that even delicate cargo arrives undamaged.
The van’s floor is protected by a marble-look plywood liner. This has been customised by routing longitudinal grooves in which ROTAL-INC rails have been recessed to support cargo bars.
Cargo bars serve two purposes.
- Firstly, they hold heavy, vertical and awkward items like plasterboard firmly in place, stopping them sliding around during transport.
- Secondly, they protect transported material against damage like dents and cracks.

Order and autonomy on the left of the Transit
The left side of this Transit for a painting and decorating business is characterized by the presence of a large number of shelves. The rearmost column consists of a floor-level compartment and five configurable shelves, all partly enclosed by Syncro’s patented lift-and-rotate doors. The column towards the front of the van is made up of two strap-type case compartments, one at floor level and the other on the shelf above, plus another three configurable shelves. The highest of these houses a 1800 W Ecoflow Delta 2 power station, held in place by a lashing strap.
A full-length top tray with an access door at the rear tops off both columns. The rear-facing side panel is equipped with a silicone tube rack and two metal hooks.
Full-height storage on the right of the Transit
The other half of this mobile warehouse is found on the right wall and consists of:
- a floor-level compartment with a lift-and-rotate door
- two metal case trays that extend on ball-bearing runners exactly like drawers to allow access to contents
- three metal drawers
- four configurable shelves with non-slip mats and space dividers
- a spray can rack and a paper roll holder on the side panel
A safe choice for the Transit’s bulkhead
For the bulkhead, the customer requested only the addition of a milled rail with hooks, for use in securing whatever material is supported by the cargo bars at the front of the van. The cargo bars themselves are attached to two milled rails, one running across a roof cross-member, the other recessed into the floor liner. To avoid damaging delicate materials, Syncro cargo bars are coated in rubber on the side that comes into contact with the load.
