To service and repair earth moving machines you need a complete workshop at your disposal at all times! The machines in question include excavators, loaders and backhoe diggers that often operate on remote sites where one minor breakdown can stop a whole team.

Mechanics who service and repair these machines need their van to be fitted out as a mobile operations centre and to carry everything they need to diagnose and fix the problem on the spot, thereby minimising customer downtime.

Every trade and profession has its own unique requirements, and this is no exception. There is no standard solution that suits all cases. Today we are examining a fully customised racking solution installed in a Mercedes Sprinter L2 H2, used to repair earth moving machines.

The customer asked us to provide an internal work area along with plenty of storage for frequently used components like filters, hydraulic fittings and spare parts. On top of this the van also had to be fully autonomous.

The solution provides efficient storage with every inch fulfilling a specific function!

The Sprinter’s racking: three requests, three effective solutions

The workshop area requested by the customer is installed on the left of the van while the right side is dedicated entirely to storage. The bulkhead is also equipped with storage, including a few special solutions.

Before installing the racking as such, the Syncro team protected the interior of the Sprinter, fitting a floor liner in 12 mm marble-look plywood, complete with stainless-steel edge profiles at all the doors, and also fitting galvanised steel wall panels.

The left side: a complete work area

The left of the Sprinter has been transformed into a work area by the addition of a marble-look plywood work surface complete with vice and raised rear edge. The functionality of this area is enhanced by an LED tube light positioned overhead, a strip of Schuko power sockets and an electrical power panel with industrial sockets, switch and ELB circuit breaker.

A large number of containers are present to carry all the small and medium-sized items needed for the job: 14 metal drawers, two shelves with top-pivot doors, and two sets of MultiBox cabinets containing a total of 30 tilting transparent containers.

There are three floor-level compartments on this side of the van. The first surrounds the wheel arch and is partly enclosed by a lift-and-rotate door. The second, also with a lift-and-rotate door, houses the compressed air tank. The third compartment is open and contains a shelf on which the compressor pump head is installed.

The rear-facing side panel of the racking is fitted with a small cable holder and an electric cable reel.

Special features: a desk in a drawer

The first drawer under the workbench is special because it houses a writing desk! The drawer incorporates a plywood board that is hinged at the rear. In horizontal position, the board serves as a very useful shelf for supporting a laptop or printer, filling out forms or checking paper drawings even when the work area above is cluttered with tools. The board can be raised easily to allow access to the contents of the drawer.

The right side: the art of storage

The mobile warehouse on the right of this Sprinter for servicing earth moving machines is organised as follows:

  • a floor-level compartment fully enclosed by a lift-up door
  • six drawers with non-slip mats and internal space dividers
  • two configurable shelves, also with mats and space dividers
  • two sets of MultiBox cabinets providing 12 large pull-out transparent containers and 12 smaller ones

The side panels are equipped, one with a multi-socket and the other with a spray can rack.

Remember you can use the bulkhead too

When you have a lot of tools and spares to carry around, the role of the bulkhead should not be underestimated. You can install more racking here if needed!

In this Sprinter, the bulkhead is equipped with two sideways-opening drawer units providing a total of seven drawers, all accessible from the ground without having to climb on board. Above these is a sealed, liquid transport tray, complete with a bottom grille, for carrying jerry cans without spillages fouling the inside the van. This column of racking is completed by a shelf at the top.

The perforated side panels are equipped with two spray can racks, a first aid kit and a compressed air hose reel.

Operational autonomy: with Syncro it’s not a mirage!

Careful design ensures that there is room for everything and that work on remote sites can be done in complete autonomy. In this van, a compressor and hose reel allow pneumatic tools to be used anywhere. A precision wiring harness connected to the vehicle's own battery supplies electrical energy wherever it is required, via socket strips, industrial sockets and a cable reel at the rear doors.
