A MOBILE WORKSHOP IN A DAILY FOR AIRPORT MAINTENANCE
A Daily with racking for airport maintenance
Perfect order is essential in this Daily for servicing airport vehicles
Today we are looking at a racking solution designed to serve a very special purpose. The van in question is an Iveco Daily L4 H2 used to service aircraft refuelling bowsers and to transport hazardous goods within the airport area. There can be no room for error in this work. Every part, seal and tool must be readily to hand inside the van. Time wasting is simply unacceptable and all work has to be carried out both quickly and safely. This van achieves all these objectives thanks to a racking system that boasts an excellent level of organisation. The heart of this solution is the large number of drawers equipped with modular trays for small parts.
Let’s take a closer look.
The secret of efficiency ... the Daily’s strategically located work area
A well-equipped workspace plays an essential role in the lives of all service engineers. The work area in this Daily is located at the bulkhead and is easily accessible through the sliding side door.
- Convenience: A generous workbench is served by a series of drawers and tool case trays while the bulkhead above it is equipped with a large, perforated tool rack panel. Everything is at your fingertips! The compartment at floor level has been transformed into a practical storage space by adding a patented lift-and-rotate door.
- Strength: The work surface is made of marble-look plywood with steel edge profiles. A raised edge at the rear stops objects slipping down behind the racking.
- Extra functionality: The racking side panel facing the door is equipped with a fold-away vice bench with integrated support. This practical accessory provides additional functionality in the form of a robust work surface and a vice for small mechanical jobs.

Why bother with liners if the walls are covered by racking?
One of the questions we get asked most frequently when designing a racking system destined to cover almost all of a van’s side walls is whether it is worth installing bodywork protection even behind the racking? We say yes!
Even if liners serve a slightly different purpose in these cases, they still represent a good investment. First of all, if we line the van’s walls first, the racking can be fixed to the liner panels, avoiding the need to drill holes in the van’s original bodywork. Secondly – and this aspect should not be underestimated – liners protect the exposed parts of the van’s bodywork behind the racking against rubbing and scratches. A floor liner, of course, is always essential. The wear and tear caused by footwear and by loading and unloading operations must be prevented as soon as possible, ideally before the new van is put on the road!
This Daily is equipped with a marble-look plywood floor liner with protective steel edge profiles and with lightweight but resistant honeycomb polypropylene wall panelling.

The left and right walls: almost perfect symmetry and maximum storage space
The left and right sides of the van have been fitted out in an almost symmetrical and identical way. The configurations on both sides include:
- three floor-level compartments with lift-and-rotate doors
- twenty-one drawers on the left and eighteen on the right, arranged in three columns, all with non-slip bottom mats and internal space dividers
- six configurable shelves, again in three columns
- a full-length top tray for long items, with a fold-down door at the rear
The extra space available on the left wall allowed the addition of a secure, double-door locker at the front of the racking.
The internal configuration of the drawers on both side walls deserves a mention. All are fitted with red plastic trays, transforming the van into a genuine warehouse on wheels and permitting a particularly accurate arrangement of parts. This precise division of space ensures that small parts and spares stay in place even on the roughest journeys.
Accessories for maximum efficiency
This Iveco Daily also contains important accessories that improve both ergonomics and safety.
Four LED tube lights have been installed under the roof to provide uniform illumination throughout the cargo compartment. Lights of this type consume less energy and provide excellent brightness.
The racking side panels are equipped with a practical and extremely popular paper roll holder on the right and a section of Syncroblock bar with hooks on the left.
